Important Updates to UST Operation and Maintenance Requirements
Beginning October 13, 2018
Walk Through Inspections – Owners and operators are required to conduct walk-through inspections at their UST facility. Click here to see the EPA’s Walkthrough Inspection guide.
Spill Prevention Equipment – Owners and operators are required to meet new requirements in regards to spill containment equipment and containment sumps. Click here to see the EPA’s Spill Prevention Equipment and Containment Sump Testing guide.
Overfill Protection Equipment – Owners and operators are required to have their overfill prevention equipment inspected on a regular schedule. Click here to see the EPA’s overview of Overfill Prevention Equipment Inspections.
Corrosion Protection – Underground Storage Tanks and piping must meet minimum requirements for corrosion protection in order to help prevent releases. These requirements can be met through the use of non-corrosive materials, cathodic protection systems, non-corrosive linings, or a combination of the aforementioned systems. Read more about corrosion protection on the EPA’s Release Prevention for Underground Storage Tanks webpage.
Release Detection Equipment – Release detection equipment comes in many different forms, both electronic and mechanical. Owners and operators are required to test their release detection equipment annually. The EPA has provided a short guide for annual testing.
Financial responsibility – Congress has directed the EPA to require owners and operators of underground storage tanks to demonstrate their financial capability to clean up a site, correct environmental damages, and compensate third parties for any damages in the event of a release. Several options for demonstrating financial responsibility can be found on the EPA’s Resources for UST Owners and Operators webpage under the Financial Responsibility tab.
